MasterChef Winner Christine Ha On Defying Expectations

I believed in and encouraged myself that any chef with vision can also use the knife without actually looking at it.

Christine Hà, from Houston, USA, has always had a love for food and was a self-taught home cook when she found her vision deteriorating at age 20. In 2003, Christine was officially diagnosed with optic neuromyelitis. But the physical disability did not weaken Christine's passion and resolve to improve her cooking. She continued to hone her culinary skills, demanding chef standards from herself and boosting her other four senses to make up for her deficiency. With a passion for cooking, she took part in culinary competition MasterChef, competing at the same level with other sensory-functional chefs, beating the odds to emerge the ultimate champion.

Christine Ha's MasterChef Apple Pie Judging

In all these years, I feel I have overcome the fear of insecurity in my life, and of course my victory in the culinary competition gave me greater confidence as well. However, during the competition, I once contemplated giving up, because the real competition on set is way more difficult and complicated than how it looks on television, we were in a high pressure environment. At one point, I really missed my home, my friends and family. But I am also a very strong person, I will not give up easily, so I choose to persevere till the very end.

What is your all-time favorite rebuke of a contestant?

I think the biggest insult I would turn around and say was, “I’ve forgotten more than you know,” or “the butternut squash, would you like it diced and rammed up your backside?”

Some 4.8 million social media followers agree with Ninong Ry (real name Ryan Morales Reyes) who is among many go-tos for no-frills takes and twists on favorites like kare-kare on a hot plate. That video, where he cursed after dropping a slab of pork belly, got 439 million views and 330,000 shares.

Ninong Ry's Humble Beginnings

Tips for Amateur Cooks

Ninong Ry said an amateur cook doesn't need many tools. You just need a high-quality chef knife that's comfortable to hold, a big enough chopping board, and a sharpening stone or steel. He reminded those at home that a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp one.

"Hindi nakakapogi 'yun na meron kang isang set [ng kutsilyo] tapos 'di mo naman ginagamit lahat", he said.

When it comes to cooking your first dish, don't do adobo, he said. It's complex for something with few ingredients.
